Lithuania Team Letter
November 3, 2005
Written by Sheila

We had a wonderful time in Austria at the EMM missionary retreat!  God's creation is so amazing!  We had a view of the Alps from our bedroom window!  We also had the trilling experience of hiking down to a glacier!  What fun!

It was also an encouraging time. On Sunday we had an opportunity to share and then everyone gathered around and prayed over us.  It was such a blessing. Basically our debriefing or reentry started once we got to the retreat.  It was good to reflect on our time in Lithuania and talk about what's next.

Please pray for us as we fly back to the States tomorrow.

Note:  You are all invited to the meetinghouse at EMM on Friday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. for a night of sharing our stories and pictures!  Hope to see ya there!

Lithuania YES Team Letter #27

Written by Sheila Hoover

October 25, 5005

“Hey! Hey!  Wait for me!  I can’t run any faster!  Can we stop and walk a little?”  I shouted to the rest of my team as they sprinted off in front of me leaving me in the dust.  The three girls on my team were determined to win the scavenger hunt we were playing in Silute with the youth on Saturday.  It was the last event we were doing with the youth group and the teenager group from church.  The evening was a huge success even though my team did not win! About 25 people showed up for the scavenger hunt, dinner, Bible study and a movie.

Sunday we woke up bright and early for a baptism.  It was a very mild autumn morning, which we were all thankful for. We packed about 35 people in 6 cars and traveled about 8 km to a nearby river.  Not only was Milda baptized but my host sister, Vidmante, was also baptized!  What God is doing in these two girl’s lives is so beautiful!

We have witnessed 4 baptisms of people from our church in the last 2 months!  Adult baptism is taken very serious by the Believers here because of the strong Roman Catholic influence in the country.  So it is great to see young people who are not ashamed be identified with Christ! Of the 4 people baptized 3 of them where under the age of 19.  It’s so incredible!  God is doing some awesome things in this church!

Cheryl, Jason and I were in charge of the whole church service that morning.  It was the last Sunday that we will be in Silute.  Our goal for the service was to celebrate what God has done in the church, encourage the Believers, and challenge them to go out and be missionaries at home, in the workplace etc.  I truly believe that this was accomplished in addition to presenting a slide show depicting the life and fellowship of the church.  At the end of the service, the church gathered around us and prayed for us.  It was such a blessing!

We have said many “Goodbyes.” Tomorrow will be the last day we will be in Silute.  Praise God for what He has done while we were here!  I am so thankful that even though we are going, He will still remain and will continue the good work He has begun here.

We are going to the EMM missionary retreat in Austria on Thursday and then return back to the States November 4.  We will write one more team letter before we return.  If you want to hear more stories and see more pictures, you are welcome to come to a program November 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Meetinghouse in Salunga.

Praises:

-Excellent final weekend of events in Silute!

-Good wrap up of our ministry!

- Good final meeting with people at church and with host families

-Our colds are much better!

Prayer Requests

-Even though our outreach in Silute ended it does not mean we are going home yet.  Pray that we will be living in the present as we are at the EMM retreat and that we would receive/give whatever God wants us to while we are there.

-Safety as we travel to Austria

Lithuania YES Team Letter 26

Yesterday began the week of lasts. We have one more week here in Silute before we leave to go to the EMM European Workers retreat in Austria at the end of next week.
We went to the childrens home for the last time. It went very well, and ended on a good note. The last couple times hadn't been the easiest for me in my class, and to be able to end on a positive note was encouraging. There was a boy who just joined my class in the last couple of months (since we returned from Wales) He just realized yesterday that I didn't speak Lithuanian fluently, and that I wasn't Lithuanian. My most used phrase was "As nesuprantu" - I don't understand.

Some interesting events from last week?

-Sheila and I took a day trip to Kaunas to see some friends there

-On Sunday we took a day trip to Palunga and HBH (a really good restaurant) with Modestas and some guests of his.

-We went to see Miss Congeniality 2 and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Praises:
~A good last time in the childrens home
~Good last times with friends
~Milda is coming back from Germany for a couple days and we will get to see her before we leave! Actually, she is getting baptized on Sunday!

Prayer:
~Good closure to our ministry here and grace to say Good-bye
~That we will have the strength to complete everything that needs done before we leave next week.
~Our health. Several of us have struggled with colds and our host brother (Danielis) is sick.

Lithuania Team Letter #25

October 11, 2005

Written by Sheila Hoover

The last two weeks have been full of excitement and new adventures for Cheryl and I!  Whether it was navigating our way around old town in Vilnius or climbing sand dunes in Nida, we defiantly will have great memories of our vacation here in Lithuania.

Our time away from Silute began September 24 when we went to the LKB Ladies Retreat.  It was wonderful!  There were about 110 women there from different towns all over Lithuania.  The main speaker was originally from Colorado, so she spoke in English, which was nice for us.  One point that has stuck with me was about determining fulfillment in life.  She encouraged us to look at two areas of our life to determine fulfillment in life - in our relationship with the Lord and our relationship with others. Reflecting back over my time here in Lithuania and our time in Wales, I must say when I look at these two areas I see that this has been a very rewarding and fulfilling time for me.  I’ve seen how I have grown in my relationship with God and how I have made so many good relationships with others.

From the women’s retreat we went to Vilnius, the capital city of Lithuania, and our vacation began.  We did a lot of sightseeing and souvenir shopping in Vilnius.  It seems as though even after our time in Wales we still did not see enough castles, so we went to two castles while in Vilnius.

After Vilnius, we went to Panevezys. This was the most enjoyable part of our vacation for both of us. We had a fabulous time hanging out with Jim and Donna Dombach and the other missionaries there. Since there are not many spectacular things to see in Panevezys, we were looking forward to just having a quiet place to rest, read and do some writing.  That is exactly what we found there in addition to a very homey atmosphere and a “Survivor” marathon!

The last leg of the journey took us to a small town called Nida.  It is along the Baltic Sea. Our small apartment was lovely and had a waterfront view!  It was cloudy the day and a half we were there, but we did not let that dampen our time there, in fact the different shades of grey in the sky actually added to the beauty of it all! God’s creation is amazing!

Before heading back to Silute, we stopped in at LCC, Lithuanian Christian College for a chapel service.  We were challenged by a Franciscan Monk to enter into a personal relationship with Jesus. Later that day we met up with Simona and other friends in Klaipeda.  It was especially good to meet Simona.  She seemed very encouraged by our time together, as we also were.

Prayer Requests:

-We would finish well!  We have little time left here with much to do.  We are very excited to return to the States, but want to be faithful and focused on what we have to do here yet.

-Jason and I as we prepare to teach Bible Study in the youth group

-Planning an all day youth event on October 22

-Planning the church service for October 23

-Good closure to our ministry and grace as we say “Good-bye” to friends

-Health – some of us are struggling with allergies and the common cold.

Praises:

-Milda is going to be baptized on October 23.  She is coming back from Germany for 10 days vacation.  We will get to see her before we leave!

-Very restful and relaxing vacation

-Pleasant meeting with our struggling friend

Lithuania YES Team letter #24
Written By: Cheryl Hershey
8/19/05

This last week most of the activities we will be involved with the next couple weeks started up. We kept busy before, but since school started a lot of church activities are too.

On Tuesdays we are meeting with a girl from church and helping her with her english homework. Youth group and the jr. high group also started this last week after they took a break for the summer. The youth group was simply a planning meeting and at the jr. high group we watched "Tarzanas"... with english subtitles : )(ačiu Gregas)

We also are returning to the childrens home two times a week. We are only going for 2 hours a day instead of 3 like we were before, which has been much easier.
Sheila and I are in the same classes that we were with before, but over the summer our classes shrank. My class originally had 12 children in, now it only has 7. Many of the children were adopted to various European countries. I found out on Friday that two of my children leave next week for Italy!

There will not be a team letter for the next 2 weeks as we will be away.

Praise:
~good times with friends this last weekend (Sheila had some visitors from the States) (Thank you all for the gifts you sent along!!)

Prayer:
~Our friend who is battling depression
~For the Women's conference this weekend, for those involved and for the women attending
~that our time on vacation next week will be refreshing
